zX - Hyperblast comes from the core ethos of retroFuture, which is embodied in our name. We fuse classic gameplay with modern design. zX brings the euphoric intensity of Shmups like Bangai-O, Gunstar Heroes, Radiant Silvergun and Hero Core to a new arena. Pilot your small, but formidable, ship through swarms of foul monstrosities and cybernetic juggernauts, carving a path of insane destruction through the games cavernous levels. Master your ship’s flexible, dual-type hybrid gun system and make short work of your enemies. Turn the intimidating maelstrom of enemy bullets to your advantage by deflecting them back to your foes with the ships powerful twin-blade attack, simultaneously fueling your insanely powerful hyper-gun. Slice through their monstrous ranks, and leave nothing alive. 'zX' encourages and rewards reckless, daredevil styled play... for only the insane will survive. Featuring lovingly crafted retro-futuristic aesthetics, intense, atmospheric sound-scapes and tight, responsive controls, this is the game your childhood self always wanted to play.

Michael began development of zX in October of 2011. The game started out as a simple project of trying to get the hang of making games. The game spiraled out of control deviating from its original 8bit colour scheme(to 16bit) and found an extra hand to help get the game along. The development of the game is fueled by pure passion — with the odd session of banging one's head against the desk. But from the beginings of not knowing how any game system works to the game it is today: zX - Hyperblast has come a long way. And my word are we ever so proud of it!

  • Daredevil melee attack system that reflects bullets. And a bullet combination system
  • Retro graphics style with cyber-esque horror, but lovingly made.
  • 66 pixel crafted levels, and an arcade mode of one life survival.
  • Killer sound so the retro child in you will feel right at home.
  • Simple Chaotic Shmup Fun!

Awards & Recognition

  • "Demo showcase A MAZE 2013" Berlin, 24 April, 2013

Selected Articles

  • "It’s a tough little game, but my word, is it ever fun, and so very well presented."
    - Chris Priestman, IndieStatik
  • "I feel that the game's focus on melee combat differentiates it from many shmups - you really need to master the blade attacks to get anywhere in zX. This feature and the combination of awesome soundtrack and glowy neon visuals totally won me over."
    - J. Monkman, Retro Gamer CD
  • "This is an intense and satisfying game which should fulfill your need for an arcade shooter."
    - John P. Martin, Indie Retro News
  • "retroFuture's zX is not like most shmups. Instead of encouraging passive play or requiring the player to dodge a ton of bullets, players should dive straight into the line of fire to reflect enemy shots and power up their hyper gun."
    - John Polson, Indiegames.com
